Job description:

This is an opportunity to join a business dedicated GRA (Governance, Risk & Assurance) Team in FO (Finance Operations) working hand in hand with the onshore Downstream GRA team to enhance and strengthen the Downstream business risk and controls framework covering the Trading & Supply class of business.

The FO T&S Operational Risk Analyst will have a strong dotted line to the T&S GRA Manager onshore who owns the overall governance and assurance framework for Trading & Supply. The candidate will develop a thorough knowledge of the Trading & Supply Business and Business risk, governance, controls and assurance activities. He/she will have regular interactions with senior key stakeholders as needed to support the various activities.

The FO Downstream GRA Business services team is a team within FO GRA services organization within Finance Operations Controllers. The FO Downstream GRA Business Services team provides a strong connection between the Business and FO.

Principal Accountabilities:

The key accountabilities of the T&S Operational Risk Analyst include:

  • Lead the global Control Learning Event (CLE) reporting process for Shell Trading & Supply. Driving a culture of learning from incidents of near misses is critical to both protecting the asset base for Shell Trading & Supply from material loss and can have significant business impact. The activity starts with gathering information but the real value comes from identifying trends, proposing areas for deep dive from findings and CLEs and extracting insights from the data.

  • Show end to end picture and messaging with greater focus on Data Analytics. The role will pull together CLE information for each of the Trading & Supply functions and businesses (Operations, Shipping, Crude & Products) on a quarterly basis and feed this into the respective governance meetings for these businesses. In addition incident information will require to be supplied to selective legal entities across the Trading & Supply network.

  • Ensure that Trading & Supply has appropriately undertaken and evidenced governance activity across the Trading & Supply network and this is continuously monitored to ensure that it is driving the correct organizational behaviours (Risk, control, action & accountability); but that it will also satisfy close scrutiny from any relevant regulator (i.e. FCA, CTFC, etc.).

  • Manage the updates and reviews of the overall Trading & Supply risk map and STASCO risk map. Custodian of the risk sheets for Trading & Supply and STASCO. Liaising with Trading & Supply risk focal points, Business GRA and functional GRA as required. Prepare for review by Trading & Supply GRA Manager in line with GRCA meeting schedule

  • Prepare and meet the various report out requirements for learning event report outs to Trading & Supply Lines of Business; Trading & Supply (monthly and per GRCA schedule), to DS Business Assurance Committee (quarterly) and to Group GRA (twice yearly). Develop ways of communicating learnings from CLEs and resulting actions, and from other assurance activities to support wider learning.

  • Prepare the late deals schedule and reasons for the GRCA meetings.

  • Maintain and act as custodian for the Trading & Supply Operational Risk Framework document. It is key that this document is kept evergreen as it can come under scrutiny from a number of regulators.

  • Perform back up activities for DS Global Analyst

    Key Challenges:

    The activities of the Trading & Supply Lines of Business to be supported are broad and complex, with significant changes in business activities, organisation and processes occurring continuously. Successful delivery of this role will be stretching and will provide the successful incumbent with an opportunity to gain insights into Trading & Supply both from a business and FO perspective.

    The role is being migrated from SBO Glasgow with a planned go live date of February 2018.
    The successful candidate will need to be proactive, quickly building up the business knowledge required to resolve issues with minimal guidance during parallel run phase working towards independence at go live.
    The role requires working effectively virtually across both organisational and cultural barriers. Strong relationship building and influencing skills will be called upon to “get the job done” and to maintain constructive relationships while challenging submitters of CLEs to get to the real root causes and to identify appropriate actions. The role also requires the ability to ‘join the dots’ within large amounts of relatively unstructured data.
    Successful delivery of this role requires indirect management and oversight of the T&S GRA Analyst- influencing without authority will be a key skill

  • The successful candidate will ideally be a professionally qualified Accountant or qualified by experience who has a range of experience in either audit or risk, assurance and controls.
  • Proactive, with good communication and inter-personal skills

  • Business partnering skills, business acumen and focus on value.
  • Analytical skills
  • Experience of learning from incidents
  • Experience in operational excellence and CI projects
  • Understanding of the T&S business drivers and related risk and ability to interpret the relevant management information is an advantage.
