Your responsibilities


Do you want to establish word class team development practices to support teams across our business to adapt and role model our mindset and behaviours and accelerate through the energy transition? If so, this is the place for you.

This role will report into the CoE Manager Senior Executive, Team and Leadership Development and provide deep expertise in Team Development.  The OD&L Centre of Expertise (CoE) brings together experts from all our areas of specialism – Global People Insights, Knowledge Management, Learning, OD, Leadership, Team and Senior Executive Development, Continuous Improvement and Causal Learning.  The CoE supports the Shell Organisational Development and Learning community through thought leadership, strategy, standards, methodologies and professional communities of practice. 

Highly effective teams will be pivotal in delivering our strategic ambitions. Teams face significant complexity and challenge as they navigate the energy transition and will increasingly need to become more agile, more integrated and more impactful in how they bring our mindset and behaviours to life in order to deliver our Powering Progress strategy. We therefore need to continuously strengthen our approach to team development to deliver business outcomes. It is key that we enable team development at scale, across our organisation to safeguard strong and diverse teams now and in the future. You will play a leading role in shaping our philosophy, strategy, methodologies; driving innovation and building capability around team development to support current and future business needs.

Success in this role will require you to be curious about the challenges and dilemmas facing teams in their various business contexts and to be active externally for insights about best available practices in team development. You will act as an inclusive partner, working closely with colleagues in the CoE, with the OD and Leadership consultants and with Learning Solutions to build and deliver Team Development as part of the overall Leadership Development strategy. Guided by data and insights, you will lead alignment on our needs and best approaches to support Team Development, find new ways to enable our teams to be at their best and raise their collective impact.  

What’s the role?

We’ll entrust you to:

  • Use data and insights to deeply understand the needs of our teams, their different business contexts and determine the priority areas of focus within our mindset and behaviours which will drive team effectiveness.

  • Bring new thinking on team development into Shell through a strong external network, research and participation in external peer groups, shaping and staying connected to best available offerings and how they may contribute to Team Development in Shell

  • Develop and implement a Team Development philosophy and strategy, identify core models and associated tools, and shape a multi-tiered approach which supports teams at all levels in the business

  • Design / curate a range of pragmatic, fit for purpose and scalable Team Development interventions based on validated practices and methodology, leading early adopter testing and subsequent roll-out

  • Partner with Leadership and OD Consultants to support the delivery of targeted and high impact development of Shell’s most senior teams.

  • Partner with ODL Managers and Leadership and OD Consultants to help drive more effective communities of leaders.

  • Work in close collaboration with other specialists in the CoE, across OD&L, Talent and more broadly to ensure an integrated approach to Team Development.

  • Play a leading role in building the capability for Team Development across the OD, Learning and HR communities through which team development interventions will be delivered

  • Develop Shell’s internal and external reputation for best practices in Team Development and engage in the Shell Organisational Development and Learning story externally.

Our requirements


What we need from you

You will bring deep expertise and experience in team development, leadership development, and/or organisational development preferably with a degree in a subject associated to HR, Learning and Development, psychology/sociology or behavioural sciences. You are:

  • A deep expert in Team Development, experienced in shaping a high quality, high impact and integrated approach to Team Development, through a combination of theory and practical solutions.
  • Results/outcome oriented, organised with strong project management capability, business value focused, balancing pragmatism with innovation, willing to experiment and try new methodologies.
  • Curious about innovations and change in the field of team and leadership development, advances in learning and/or organisational development and have experience in applying new approaches.
  • An effective relationship builder, able to communicate at all levels, work with others across the organisation, and ask insightful questions to identify root causes and tease out the biggest opportunities to increase team impact.
  • Experienced in building external partnerships, enabling them to bring the best of their expertise to address Shell’s challenges and needs.
  • Experienced in supporting team development capability building for others
  • Highly self-aware and able to adapt style to fit the needs of the situation and willing to grow your own Learner Mindset.
  • Experienced in representing organisations on external steering groups, working groups and thought leader panels to influence change in best practice
