Job description:

We are looking for a capable and independent person to be part of a Global Operations team in Legal that predominantly focuses on safety and environmental legal issues globally. We work as a team in providing legal advice and support and strive to be accepted by the business as a reliable, credible, professional business partner.

Providing high quality, accurate and timely legal advice under Legal Services Global Operations department with a strong focus on safety and environmental issues with view to furthering business objectives and protecting shareholder interests:

  • Basic review of Safety & Environment (S&E) communications material, external and internal. (e.g. disclosure of Shell information via Shell or partners’ sites; social media posts; presentations for industry conferences; articles for internal and external publications; technical papers; training materials.)

      •     Review of incident reports and other incident-related materials.
      •     Review of ‘Learning from Incidents’ and other learning materials,   e.g. reflective learning videos, for  internal and external consumption.

  • Review of audit reports, basic advice on legal risks related to audits (e.g. legal protection in place when auditing NOVs), basic review of stated findings and engagement of Subject Matter Experts when necessary (e.g. antitrust counsel re secondments of partners’ personnel into Shell audit teams).

  • Drafting and review of S&E related contracts (e.g. NDA’s; consultancy engagement letters; joint defense and limitations tolling agreements; service level agreements; non-commercial partnerships; external technical collaborations/services; secondment agreements) and interpretation of contracts. Assisting with updates of HSSE section of Contracting & Procurement model contracts to ensure alignment with the HSSE & SP Control Framework.

  • Assisting in creating content for legal and business partners, e.g., training materials, short guidance notes or FAQs on specific legal questions and giving legal briefings to stakeholders as required (e.g. antitrust risks in HSSE activities; careful business communication).

  • Undertaking legal research, including finding out what different jurisdictions say about relevant legal issues and tracking down contacts/information/data in different parts of Shell.

  • Providing basic advice on the HSSE & SP Control Framework and other standards/manuals.

  • Review of electronic documents for production to agencies or third parties.

  • Assist in creating, organizing and maintaining team LDMS site (document management system) with legal research and training materials.

  • Periodically review Legal Emergency Response Plans and Emergency Response - Legal intranet site to flag items that need updating.

  • Carry out such other tasks to support colleagues within the Global S&E Team, as required.

 

Requirements:

- Possess at least 3-5 years legal experience. Experience in the oil and gas industry or international energy projects will be an added advantage
- Possess a Degree in Law
- Good negotiating skills
- Strong legal drafting skills
- Experience in dealing with safety and environmental issues will be an added advantage
- The ability to develop and sustain relationships with clients at all levels
- Broad corporate and commercial outlook
- Able to develop and implement legal compliance programmes and policies;
- Able to influence Leaders and teams
- Excellent in interpersonal skills and able to communicate in excellent English (both written and verbal);
- Sensitive to local culture, understanding local drivers, values and relationships
