Group Reporting Data Controller
General Position Definition
 
Group Reporting delivers accurate and on time financial information to internal and external stakeholders. In addition, it is a center of expertise, which sets standards, provides advice and builds capability for financial accounting and reporting within Shell.
The Reporting team within Group Reporting is responsible for preparation of the Group Consolidated Financial Statements that are published quarterly and annually, and preparation of Group level management information with the objective of providing insights of Group performance to the Executive Committee and other senior stakeholders.
 
The Group Reporting Data Controller is a member of the Reporting team. She/he needs to have a firm understanding of the Report Data model, as well as the data flow through Reporting tool, combined with a strong understanding of the External and Internal reporting requirements.

Accountabilities

  • The Group Controllers organisation is responsible for financial reporting, both the external disclosures as well as Group Level Management Information. Issues arising from materially incorrect reporting can have billions of $ impact on the Balance Sheet and hundreds of millions on the Profit and Loss Statement. Reputational issues arising from incorrect reporting could have a material effect on RDS share price. Incorrect reporting could also lead to incorrect Senior Management decisions.
  • The Group Reporting Data Controller is responsible for monitoring the monthly/quarterly data flow through Reporting tool, ensuring data in different stages of completion remains aligned.
  • Responsible for the identification and understanding of data integrity issues across the Reporting tool platform.
  • Responsible for flagging data flow or data integrity issues to IT Support, and follow up to resolution, while keeping the Reporting Community (incl. Business reporting teams) aware of progress.
  • Review Master Reference Data changes across the Reporting tool landscape, and assess potential impact on data integrity checks.
  • Assist Reporting Team and IT support in assessing options, providing guidance and pro/cons when restatement of historical information is required (e.g. guidance on preparation of restatement rules/load files, etc.)
  • Coordination of the yearly XBRL tagging process and review for accuracy of the XBRL tagging for the RDS financial statements, as prepared by an outside vendor.

The importance of world class financial reporting has never been more evident and this is an exciting time to take on the challenge of this position. The Group Controllers organisation is responsible for the External Financial Reporting framework for the entire Group.
 
 

  • The Group Reporting organisation is responsible for consolidating the Financial Statements for Royal Dutch Shell plc, providing the accounting framework for the entire Group and supporting the planning and business appraisal process. Issues arising from accounting developments can have $ billions of impact on the balance sheet and hundreds of millions on the income statement. Reputational issues arising from mishandled accounting issues could have a significant effect on the share price and therefore on total shareholder return.
  • This role offers a comprehensive overview of Shell businesses, performance and financial statements.

 
Special Challenges
 

  • Requires the ability to absorb volumes of data, reconcile and analyse the numbers, understand the underlying data structure and be able to communicate them under considerable time pressures.
  • Requires the ability to quickly establish credibility and relationships across the Group and Business reporting teams, as well as IT Support.
  • Requires the ability to find reporting inconsistencies, translate those into data model and – flow challenges, which will need to be resolved through IT.

Requirements:
Experience and Qualifications required
 

  • Working level experience as a financial accountant – 6 years.
  • The key finance competencies required are in the areas of Business Analysis, Management Information, Data modelling.
  • Well-developed reporting understanding and strong data focus.
  • The ability to apply a disciplined and firm approach to complex issues while applying analytical skills.
  • The ability to work independently, resolve complex issues and work proactively, anticipating internal and external events that may affect the data integrity.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • The ability to work quickly and accurately under considerable time pressure, having an orientation to detail and high quality while maintaining the global picture.
  • The ability to work effectively in a matrix environment given significant cross-department processes.
  • Well-developed communication and influencing skills, effective at all levels in the organisation. The ability to challenge data as appropriate, whilst maintaining strong relationships across the Group.
